Exploring the role of Nature in Guyana

Our CEO Marc Palahí visited Guyana in March, together with a delegation from The King’s Foundation. The visit aimed to learn about and discuss Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030, in relation to future nature conservation, sustainable forestry, agriculture and urban development. Marc met with several members of the Guyanan government as well as with Chief Indigenous representatives.
Part of the trip also included a visit to Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and Development to see forestry activities and nature conservation opportunities. The Centre was established in 1996 under a joint mandate from the Government of Guyana and the Commonwealth Secretariat to manage the Iwokrama forest, a unique reserve of 371,000 hectares of rainforest.
Marc also visited the village of Moraikobai, to discuss how Indigenous-led activities around forestry and food can be developed further within a nature conservation framework.
